Summary of Ancient Babylon

Important Dates as they relate to the history of the Ancient Near East

1728-1686 BC Hammurabi expands borders and codifies laws.
1270 BC Babylonia overpowered by Assyria, becomes a second rate power for about 700 years.
625 BC Nabopolassar, father of Nebuchadnezzar, becomes king of Babylonia. Here begins the Neo-Babylonian Empire.
612 BC The Assyrian capital of Ninevah falls to the combined armies of the Babylonians and Medes.
605 BC Beginning of Nebuchadnezzar's 44 year rule. Under him Babylon reaches its zenith. He conquers (but does not destroy) Jerusalem. First deportation begins--Daniel and the first wave of exiles are taken to Babylon.
596 BC Nebuchadnezzar lays siege to Jerusalem and reconquers it. Second deportation begins--Ezekiel and others taken to Babylon.
588 BC King Zedekiah makes the fateful decision to renounce his oath of allegiance to Babylon and rebel from its control. Nebuchadnezzar begins the final siege of Jerusalem.
586 BC Jerusalem falls to Nebuchadnezzar's army after a 19 month siege. Nebuchadnezzar reconquers and destroys the city; the Temple is destroyed and the sacred articles are carried back to Babylon.
539 BC Babylon falls to the Medes and Persians.
