Spiritual Lessons from the Sloth in Proverbs

Characteristics of the sloth (lazy person) in the Book of Proverbs:

1. 10:5   The sloth misses important opportunities; expects others to make up for his work deficiencies
2. 10:26   The sloth is careless about his sense of mission; frustrates his employer, can't work unsupervised; is unsubmissive; has no sense of accountability
3. 10:27; 19:24   The sloth doesn't follow through, even in small or easy matters
4. 15:19  

 

The sloth is unable to see clearly to make proper choices; is confused
5. 19:15  

 

The sloth gets into a deep rut; can't seem to get going; is numb to what's around him
6. 20:4  

 

The sloth becomes easily discouraged; can't handle adversity, hardship, or opposition. He has no determination; no concern for the future
7. 21:25  

 

The sloth is full of envy, greed, and unfulfilled desires. He substitutes "wishing" for "working"
8. 24:30  

 

The sloth lets things go, procrastinates, doesn't take care of what he has
9. 26:13  

 

The sloth has irrational fears and empty excuses for not working. He is overwhelmed by remote or imaginary dangers, is paralyzed into inactivity by them
10. 26:16  

 

The sloth is self-deceived into believing that he is wiser than others; he has an endless fund of excuses
