God's Purpose in Choosing Israel

  1. To be a means of blessing to the whole world (Gen. 12:2, Exod. 19:5–6).

  2. To serve as people through whom the Messiah would come and die.

  3. Israel was not chosen because of any intrinsic worthiness on her part (Deut. 7:6–7).

  4. What were Israel's advantages?

    a. Rom. 3:2 – They were entrusted with the Scriptures ("oracles of God").
    b. Rom. 9:4–5 – "adoption as sons, the glory, the covenants and the giving of the Law and the temple service, and the promises."

Examples of Extreme Views Regarding Israel
(Which I Reject)

  1. Israel has been cut off totally and permanently. Israel is just another nation like Ethiopia. The regathering of Israel is just a historical anomaly. Since the Jews have rejected the Messiah we should try to de-Judiaize Scripture. (This anti-Jewish bias has had some connection with 19th century German theological schools.)

  2. The Jews are the superior race; God loves a Jewish believer more than a Gentile believer. Being Jewish is a greater honor than being "in Christ."

  3. Israel and the church will never dwell together in the eternal state.

  4. Unbelieving Jews (and the modern State of Israel) are pleasing God and experiencing the fulfillment of millennial promises (even if in early stages)—they are inheritors of the blessings of God apart from repentance and faith in Jesus Christ.
