Practical Implications of the Presence of God

Empowerment, Enablement, Deliverance, Success

When it is said that God is with someone the meaning is that their success is guaranteed (for doing God's will), they are divinely empowered. Moses stood up to Pharaoh and was the agent of God's deliverance. Likewise Gideon, Samson and David (see below). See the related pages on divine commission and presence and "Immanuel."

Deut. 31:8 And the LORD is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear, or be dismayed.

Josh. 1:5 No man will be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I have been with Moses, I will be with you; I will not fail you or forsake you.

Josh. 7:12 Therefore the sons of Israel cannot stand before their enemies; they turn their backs before their enemies, for they have become accursed. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy the things under the ban from your midst.

Judges 6:16 Surely I will be with you, and you shall defeat Midian as one man.

1 Sam. 3:19 Thus Samuel grew and the LORD was with him and let none of his words fail.

1 Sam. 17:37 And David said, “The LORD who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine.” And Saul said to David, “Go, and may the LORD be with you.”

Matt. 28:19-20 "Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

Deliverance

Moses in standing before Pharaoh.

Gideon in defeating the Midianites.

Samson in being invincible when the Spirit was with him.

David in deafeating Goliath (and everyone else--he never lost a battle that is recorded in Scripture)

Blessing

Gen. 26:3 Sojourn in this land and I will be with you and bless you

Gen. 26:24 Do not fear, for I am with you. I will bless you

Peace and Joy (Contentment)

Heb. 13:5 Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, "I will never leave you nor forsake you." - This passage indicates that the realization of the presence of God should cure all believers of materialism. The basis of Christian contentment is the acknowledgement of and trust in the presence of God.

Heb. 13:6 So we may boldly say: "The LORD is my helper; I will not fear. What can man do to me?" Here we see that the presence of God is the ground of peace. Nothing can happen to the believer that is outside of God's plan or purpose. We commit ourselves to the Faithful Creator knowing that He always does what is best and what is right. This has tremendous implications for counseling, especially for those who are prone to worry, nervousness, and depression.

Assurance of Protection, (Fear Forbidden)

Gen. 26:24 Do not fear, for I am with you. I will bless you.

Gen. 28:15 I am with you, and will keep you wherever you go.

Num. 14:43 For the Amalekites and the Canaanites will be there in front of you, and you will fall by the sword, inasmuch as you have turned back from following the LORD. And the LORD will not be with you.

Deut. 31:8 And the LORD is the one who goes ahead of you; He will be with you. He will not fail you or forsake you. Do not fear, or be dismayed.

Will of God

Jonah 1:3 But Jonah rose up to flee to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD. So he went down to Joppa, found a ship which was going to Tarshish, paid the fare, and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish from the presence of the LORD.

Covenant Promises

Gen. 26:3 Sojourn in this land and I will be with you and bless you, for to you and to your descendants I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath which I swore to your father Abraham.

Gen. 48:21 Behold, I am about to die, but God will be with you, and bring you back to the land of your fathers.
