Apocalyptic Dimensions of Local Judgments

Flood of Noah. Worldwide judgment, followed by a new earth. There are numerous parallels between the time before flood and time before the end of the age. Gen. 6-8 Matt. 24:37–39
Destruction of Sodom & Gomorrah. Apocalyptic destruction of the wicked. Gen. 19:24-25 Luke 17:28-29
Fall of Judah. Worldwide dimension in Zeph. 1:2 --"I will sweep everything from off the face of the earth" Zephaniah 1:2–3; 14-18.
Fall of Samaria and Judah. Apocalyptic imagery of terrestrial changes involving mountains melting and valleys splitting. Micah 1:3-4
Fall of Ninevah, capital of Assyria. Worldwide, apocalyptic dimensions. All the rivers run dry, mountains quake, valleys split, the earth and all who dwell in it tremble at his presence. Nahum 1–3 (1:5, 8, 11, 14; 3:18)
Fall of Babylon. Tied to the cessation of cosmic light and the judging of the world for its evil. Isaiah 13:1, 6, 9–11, 17, 19
Destruction of Edom. Linked to the judgment upon all nations. Isaiah 34:2–4; 9, 11; Obadiah 1–2 , 15; Isaiah 63:1–4.
Destruction of Jericho. City under curse; judgment falls after the blowing of the seventh trumpet. Joshua 6; Rev. 11:15–18 (Note the parallels with the blowing of the seventh trumpet.)
Fall of Jerusalem in A.D. 70. Linked to the end of the age in each Gospel. In the Olivet Discourse, questions regarding fate of the Temple and the end of the age are both dealt with in one answer. Difficult to separate each judgment because they are related and because there are apocalyptic overtones to Jerusalem's fall. Certain features that are hyperbolic in the near fulfillment of AD 70 may be literally fulfilled in the full and final realization at the return of Christ. Matt. 24; Mark 13; Luke 21.
