Unger's Commentary on the Old Testament

Perhaps the best single volume commentary on the Old Testament ever written.

Out of print for nearly 30 years.
Now back in print from AMG and for about a third of the price of the original edition.

Merrill F. Unger was the head of the Semitics department at Dallas Theological Seminary for twenty years. He distilled the essence of his teaching notes into a rather comprehensive treatment of the entire Old Testament. The notes include detailed information on Hebrew, manners and customs, history, literary analysis, and theology. His outlines are often superb. He writes without any fluff or superfluous technical verbage. He is unstintingly conservative in his approach. The information is rich, engaging, theologically sound, and full of interesting nuggets. His book commentary is helpful for the layman, pastor, or serious Bible teacher.. The information regarding archaeology, original languages, and history is invaluable. His outline of Isaiah and treatment of Isaiah 53 are both a masterpiece

That being said, I do find occasional fault with over applying certain texts to eschatological ethnic Israel, where I would rather see them as belonging to the general household of faith. He goes into some typology that some might regard as excessive.

Note: This book is completely different than his Unger's Bible Handbook, which is far more general in nature than this book.

Bottom Line: I highly recommend this book. Buy it before it goes out of print again. AMG is to be commended for combining the original two volume set into a single book (with thinner pages).
