Three Foundational Principles of Sound Biblical Apologetics
Sound, Biblical apologetics is based on three foundational principles:
- Never argue to Scripture. Always argue from Scripture. Never rest your evangelism on appeals to reason, science, philosophy, natural laws (1 Corinthians chapters 1-3). Always assume Scripture is true and reason from it. Efforts are unscriptural and in vain if they are based upon natural reason even if they have the intent to eventually bring people to Biblical reason. If we are to be "fishers of men" we must use the net that God designed: the inspired Word of God. If we are to evangelize under the convicting power of the Spirit we must present the truths that He will empower for Christ's glory (John 16:8 "And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment")
- The best apologetics is a good sermon. All good, true apologetics is a sound, sustained, and illustrated explanation of Scripture. Never be ashamed of explaining Scripture. Never stoop down to the level of the unbeliever.
- Never allow the kind of forum where God or His Word are on an equal plane with falsehood. God alone is the truth. He will not share equality of position or validity with false teachings. Hence:
- It is erroneous to put Christianity on par with other world religions in academic classes, etc. .
- It is fruitless to engage in academic forums where the opinions of unbelievers are held as equally valid as those of believers. If we submit to a forum where false systems are accorded equal plausibility and validity, in effect, we are saying that God is not supreme, that His truth is not uniquely true. This itself is a repudiation of Biblical truth
- It is wrong to elevate "science" or "objective reason" to a place of equality with "Scriptural truth" or "Biblical reason."
